The fateful day began at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 29, when officers were called to a business in the 11900 in Waldorf to investigate a report of a man who was beating and choking a woman in what was described as a “random attack,” authorities say.

A nearby officer on patrol responded and found the injured woman on the ground and a suspect speeding away in her car, prompting a police pursuit that led them to Mattawoman Beantown Road, with the driver still acting recklessly.

The pursuit was swiftly ended when the driver was approaching Poplar Hill Road, lost control and crashed into a dump truck in the area. The suspect - who has not been identified - was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the crash, the dump truck driver was treated and the woman who was assaulted was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about the crash or events leading up to it has been asked to contact the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division by calling (410) 576-7070.
